2007 Healthcare Hero Nominee
Heather Emanuel

Physician assistant Heather Emanuel says she’s never won any actual awards, but that the heartfelt letters from her patients, whom she refers to as her extended family, mean the world to her.

“As a health care worker, Heather exceeds the standards of a PA,” says patient Penny Rogers. “I was diagnosed with renal failure and suffered a stroke at the age of 42, and without the assistance of Heather Emanuel, there is a chance I would not be here today.”

Rogers says she was seen promptly by Emanuel even on days when she hadn’t scheduled an appointment.

Emanuel works at Samaritan Family Health in Lacona, but she also makes house calls for her homebound patients.

“I am thrilled when I get a card, or letter or even flowers from my patients,” says Emanuel, “or when they bring a child, grandchild or a dog to meet me.”

Emanuel is former vice president of Winona Forest Recreation Association, a member of the American Association of Physician Assistants, and a member of NY State Society of Physician Assistants. She also sings with the North Country Music Society and the United Methodist Church Choir.
