2007 Healthcare Hero Nominee: Hasan Zakariyya
He was born to be a doctor. Dr. Hasan Zakariyya is widely known not just for his expertise in medicine, but for going above and beyond all expectations for his patients.
Zakariyya specializes in internal medicine at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital in Fulton.
He is an honorable mention in the Physician/Fulton category for the Second Annual Healthcare Hero awards.
“When each of us was hospitalized on separate occasions, Dr. Zakariyya spent a long time diagnosing our various conditions,” said Patricia Niccoli, a retired high school teacher who along with her husband John, a plumber, nominated Zakariyya for the award.
“He went along with us as various tests were performed to get the results immediately,” she added.
“He takes much time in his office visits. When I receive monthly testing at the hospital, he is frequently mentioned as a most caring, knowledgeable physician and is extremely well-thought of,” Niccoli said.
A nurse at Lee Memorial, Donna DuBois-Taylor, said “Dr. Zakariyya virtually lives in his office.” “He comes to help us in the ICU even when he’s not on call. He always goes above and beyond for everyone, not just patients, but nurses too,” she added. “He never complains and always has a smile.” Another nurse, Theresa Fitzgibbons, said Zakariyya shows “daily selfless acts of kindness.” An ICU nurse at Lee Memorial, Helen Phillips, summed it up this way: “I wish we could clone him!”
Zakariyya was born in Lahore, Pakistan.
He has practiced in Oswego County since 1986 and is part of the active staff at both Lee Memorial and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
He is board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, and lipidology. He is one of the first 300 diplomates in lipidology in the United States.
He earned his medical degree at King Edward Medical College in Pakistan
